Pancakes, Closets, and Keeping it Real.

Pancakes, Closets, and keeping it real…

That’s a little of what you’ll find in the video I’m sharing. There are a lot of “golden nuggets” in this TEDx talk by Ash Beckham titled Coming Out of Your Closet, that I think trying to write too much about them would just mask what you might pick up, or pick out, on your own. So, I’m not inclined to try to tell you what I think. You’ll see.

I will tell you that around 3:25-4:30, I’m impressed by Ms. Beckham’s very concise description of something I have tried to explain to and discuss with people for years.

Hard is not relative. Hard is hard (…) We need to stop ranking our hard against everyone else’s hard (…) and just commiserate on the fact that we all have hard.

I know the thoughts that struck me the most in this video. I’m curious to see what points made an impression on everyone else. Let’s be real.

Simply Put – We could all be a lot better if we stopped comparing the size of our closets and started being real with one another.

Be cool with New Sun Rising on Day of Giving.

Seriously. Go grab a beer and meet New Sun Rising (NSR) during Day of Giving. Really? Nonprofit people drink? Well, maybe the cool ones. ūüėČ

Here’s a Day of Giving message from the folks at NSR:

Today is the Pittsburgh Foundation’s annual Day of Giving. ¬†From 12:00 AM until 11:59 PM this evening, all donations of $25 – $1,000 will be matched by a portion of the $750,000 pool from regional funders.
Donating a gift in support of New Sun Rising, and your other favorite nonprofits, is simple.
  1. You must make your donation through the Day of Giving website
  2. Go to the Nonprofit donation page here:
  3. Enter your information including New Sun Rising as one of your nonprofit selections
Please join us for a celebration with free tasty appetizers at Draai Laag Brewing Company from 5:30 Р8:30 PM and make your donation there!  Come meet the members of NSR and learn more about our projects and impact in the community.
Remember, your gift today has a greater impact through the matching pool of funds.  Why wait until the end of the year to make a donation?
Thanks for your continued support!

NSR made it short and sweet in their appeal:

The secret is out.  Pittsburgh is a great place to live, work and create.

What many people don’t realize is the amount of dedication that goes into the rebirth of a City. ¬†Our neighborhoods have become revitalized through the passionate work of grass-roots organizers and visionaries. ¬†One by one, they move projects towards reality while taking us along for the ride.

County-level organic farming initiatives.  One of a kind game and fire arts festivals.  Library services for a deserving community.  A Zombie Opera and Memorial Skatepark. Music camps for under-served youth.  Neighborhood performances and artist gallery events. Interactive community garden healing spaces.
New Sun Rising has been behind some of the region’s most innovative and engaging projects for the past 8 years. ¬†We invite you to meet our new board of directors and projects on Thursday, and learn more about how we are working to help local projects change Pittsburgh for the best.
Come on out to Draai Laag Brewing in Millvale on Oct 3rd and consider supporting New Sun Rising on the Day of Giving anytime that day.  Your donation will have a greater impact and be matched by the Pittsburgh Foundation and other regional grant makers!

Simply Put – Grab a beer and some snackage with New Sun Rising and make giving a Day of Fun!
