PodCamp Jr.

September 15, 2011 11 comments

Random joking on Twitter this morning from @douglasderda has caused me to come up with a little idea.

His tweet:

@douglasderdaFather Spoon
Next year i propose that Podcamp Pittsburgh installs a daycare :) Teaspoon wont be ready to present for at least 2 more years #pcpgh6

My idea.

Why couldn’t we make a PodCamp Jr. for ages 10-15?

Let’s say we get several people to run 3 or 4 sessions in 4 hour blocks of time (AM and PM) that the kids could rotate through each hour.

Like:

*Internet safety

*How not to be(post stuff) like an idiot on the internet? (Ok that’s not THE title, but you get my drift)

*Where to find good sites to play and connect with other kids on the internet? (We could beg @iTwixie to help out on that one)

*Cyber Bullying

*Some kind of group project for developing something web related.

And possibly run PodTots for the 5-10 age group?

Same idea as above but sessions scaled to that age group.

While the parents are in the “Old Kid” sessions, their offspring sits in on these.

We could get some great feedback and insight from the kids on how they are using the internet and what sites they use most often and why.

(Obviously no live streaming or videos since it’s kids.)

I don’t know. Just an idea.

Simply Put- Random tweets make you think sometimes.

Please pass this around to anyone in the non-profit community you know. Tweet it with their @, post it to their Facebook page, provide the link in an email, leave their contact info in a comment if you can’t send it. Thank you for getting the word out. I can’t reach everyone without your help.

I will be presenting a session at PodCamp Pittsburgh 6 for our wonderful area organizations that help those less fortunate or who are in need titled: “Motivate Me! A Non-Profit’s Guide to Engaging Individuals” on Sunday September 18, 2011 at 2PM at Point Park University.  The PCPGH6 press release details what PodCamp is. A two-page  list of all sessions can also be found on the PodCamp Pittsburgh site.

In this 45 minute session we’ll focus on how to motivate people in the community to be part of your mission using social media sources such as Facebook, Twitter, blogs and videos. You already have the tools you need, you might just need to rethink how you are using them- or how to start using them at all.  Our session together will be relaxed, yet informative and you’ll walk out with a reference guide to take back to the office- as well as the ability to link to some of what we discuss after you leave.

As always, sessions at PodCamp are free.  Register here. I can’t wait to see you there.
